Research first. Visit tracks and various hobby stores. Talk to others involved with radio control hobbies. Take your time there is no shortage of good R/C Equipment. See BUYING TIP: below for more info on this subject
With the newest of RTR (Ready to Run) R/C Models out there almost any taste can now be met. All the same research and ask qualified people to help. But now you have a greater choice of no hassle ways to start a great hobby.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to deal only with Knowledgeable and Established Hobby stores. When visiting a shop: Take the part to be replaced. Calling ahead will give you good information on whether they sales staff is knowledgeable. Double check part numbers, some shops will give you a comparable part (they don't always work). Check for signs regarding: NO Refunds or exchange policies. Special orders: If you order a product not in stock: Be sure to get an exact delivery date. Be sure to notify the sale person in the event your order is not received when stated you reserve the right to withdrawal from the purchase agreement. IMPORTANT: Down payments on special orders or purchases. When paying in advance for any order: Be sure to have the sales rep write on your recipe the delivery date. Once again. be sure to state in writing on the receipt if not received by delivery date you reserve the right to withdrawal from the purchase agreement. without loss. I cannot stress enough. How important it is to deal with a good hobby shop. |
Only operate your R/C toy in a safe area. Not on public roads or on Commercial property. There are clubs and tracks that use various safety measures to ensure the participants and spectators remain safe. Also consider noise and damage caused by Nitro engines to the environment and others personal property.
Money doesn't solve all problems, Some simple fixes are easy and cheap just by thinking it over. No quick decisions are good when it comes to purchasing expensive r/c equipment.
Receiver Protection: stop glitching and interference with all Types of R/C Receivers, use a Mylar bag to put the receiver into prior to installation. These bags are what most electronics and computer components come in. Mylar will stop a GPS Signal it will stop Radio interference as well.
Use balloons to cover the shocks on your dirt vehicles it keeps the shafts clean and helps the life of the shock oil. Be careful the balloons sometimes tighten the springs and create a stronger, stiffer spring rate. For those a little less visual use long party balloons, un-inflated. :)
More electronics radio information: I poses a Futaba Super 3PJ FM PCM radio with all the bells and whistle. So what I'm just blowing my horn ? NOOO, I also have a HiTec Spectra 75 adjustable transmitter frequency module. Apparently the trick is just to plug the module in to the radio transmitter. No Kidding, it works of course don't forget to set it to your frequency first. What a great combination, well it is for me. The High end stuff never seems to let me down.
Performance Nitro Tip: You must get and learn how to use a digital Temperature gauge, this separates the boys from the men. Your Nitro car will run greater than you could ever imagined once you've learned temperature ranges and tolerances. All, I repeat ALL motors work at similar but different temperature ranges. Learn the motor itself, but use recommended manufacture temps as a starting point.
Performance Nitro Tip: To use a high percentage Nitro fuel in Small block motors (.18 or smaller) use head shims and the motor will last much longer on the higher Nitro fuels. Start using shims at 30% Nitro content. Start small, re-tune and check glow plug frequently

Break in Tips: This is a widely defined question I get a lot. I guess how you break in your motor and the best way to do it depends on several factors. I just think all the effects of weather, climate, elevation, end use, life expectancy, power ratio from rating, type of motor, reliability. All these things and a couple more have great effects on each other and how it should be broke in. In return the way you break it in will determine how long and what kind of performance and reliability you'll get from your motor. 1. Some ideas are, using a quart of helicopter fuel, it contains more oil and you will be able to run it almost after the first tank. Don't forget to go easy and the first few tanks or you'll over heat it and the piston and sleeve won't seat correctly. Be sure to occasionally rev the motor to keep it at operating temp. DO NOT OVER-REV 2. Or by idling a few tanks through your motor of the fuel you plan to use until you get the carb settings adjusted to the point where the engine temp stays in a safe range. (approx. half gallon of fuel) this method is time consuming but allows the motor to wear in properly and be much more reliable and consistent.
Fuel Tips: More is not always better well when it comes to fuel percentages. Some if not most motors (Stock grinds) work more consistently on fuels with lower Nitro percentages. Most motors work well but require occasional re-tuning on moderate Nitro percentage fuel. Most motor have a quick life on High Nitro percentage fuels if any life at all. Most correctly ported and polished modified hi-rev motors work just fine on high Nitro percentage fuels and can also handle fuel with higher oil content fairly easily. Low oil content in any motor will hurt it and shorten its life and reliability. The highest oil content fuel is only good on really hot mod motors. have fun and remember Hot is fast. Extremely warm runs well. moderately warm makes a long living moderately powered motor but wont win a race. A lot of smoke is for the handicapped or extremely poor.

Much less pricey than Nitro
The easiest way to get into radio control cars and trucks.
| TMaxx Bumpers: This is a great Money saver. Now for
you great drivers this isn't really going to help, but for the 99.9 percent of us who run
our Maxx's into anything and everything this is great. Use a striker plate from a door
jam. Yep that's all, a plate that your typical household door uses to snap closed. Any
hardware store has a choice of color and size for under 5 bucks. Just drill 4 mounting
holes for the plate to mount to the bumper supports and your good to bump and crash some
more. Of course grinding the corners round and doing other creative things is all on you.
